Mooning Over Your Health

Tip: On the days of the complete Full Moon and New Moon, it’s advisable to avoid foods containing salt. If you cannot fast, eat only fresh fruits, sweets or foods that have low or no salt content.

“Well, what’s the Moon got to do with it?”

A lot! All of us know the tremendous effect the moon exerts on our planet and its denizens. Who does not know of the moon’s effect on the oceans’ tides? Have we not read and heard about – or even seen the havoc wreaked upon thousands of unsuspecting sailors over the ages who have foolishly ventured out into the high seas during the night of the new moon and paid for it with their lives? Even animals fear the Moon: have we not seen dogs and wolves howl at the full moon, and other animals behaving erratically or fearfully during the full moon? Closer to home, it’s widely believed that the 28 day menstrual cycle of women is based on the 28 lunar cycle. And sages of yore as well as modern day psychiatrists swear that people with mental diseases, even those who are normally docile, become extremely violent during the full or new moon – they become lunatics!

That is the power of the moon over our planet.

Of course, there’s a scientific explanation to this phenomenon that has been available to traditional medicine, especially Siddha, over thousands of years. The moon orbits the earth every 28 days, and generates a huge magnetic field that exerts both centrifugal and centripetal forces of immense magnitude. These forces act upon the constituents of our bodies – those constituents that govern our body’s physical wellness and mental stability. When the power of the moon’s gravity reaches its zenith (new moon day) or its lowest ebb (full moon day), the salts in the body begin to transform into potentially toxic compounds that could negatively affect the body. Considering that our entire body is composed of various kinds of salts, and our blood too is largely based on different salts, the damage caused could be considerable. Therefore, on these days, it is best to avoid any kind of salt intake. The best way would be to fast on these days – something that is good for you even in the normal course of events. However, if for some compelling reason you cannot fast, it would be best to have fruits, sweets or other foods that have low or no salt content. This way, you avoid the damage that would be otherwise caused to the health of your body and mind!

The moon has always been associated with romance and mystery. It is. However, next time you think the full moon is romantic, or that the new moon is wonderfully mysterious, remember: it is, as long as you stay away from salt.
