Jaundice – Cause, Effect and Cure
Tip: Having a small ball sized portion of the mashed leaves of the plants leucas aspera (thumbai), eclipta prostrata (karisilankanni) and phyllanthus amarus (keezhanelli) in equal proportion in a half cup of curds from cow’s milk, along with a simple diet can cure even acute jaundice within a short period.
“But I don’t have bad habits such as drinking, smoking or eating junk food, so I will never have jaundice!”
Oh yeah, so you think. What most people do not know is that some form of jaundice affects almost all humans at some point in their lives, irrespective of their age, gender, race or social status. Even animals are known to contract jaundice. In fact, a rather common, harmless condition known as prenatal or neonatal jaundice affects the unborn or newborn child! So there!
As you probably know, jaundice is a condition associated with liver diseases such as hepatitis (hepa=liver, titis=infection) or liver cancer[i]. It must be understood that jaundice itself is not a disease, but rather a symptom of disorders in the process of metabolism and excretion of bilirubin. Jaundice is chiefly characterised by a loss of appetite, yellowness of the eyes, dark urine, irritation or even extreme pain during urination, nausea, restlessness, insomnia, and in acute cases, swelling and inflammation of the joints and difficulty in movement. Hepatitis-1B is a form of jaundice that is usually fatal. Internal symptoms include enlargement of the liver or pancreas, dilation of the biliary duct in the case of stone blockage, cirrhosis or even liver failure.
Jaundice is usually caused by conditions created due to excessive drinking, smoking, and bad food habits. However, it can also be brought about by obstruction of the normal flow of bilirubin by gall bladder stones. Jaundice can also be triggered by malaria and other pathological conditions and diseases. This means that even if you’re not a smoker, drinker, or even have bad food habits, there are a number of factors that could send you to hospital with acute jaundice! There goes your claim that because you’re a great guy, you’ll never get jaundice!
The best bet against jaundice of course is prevention, the eschewing of practices such as drinking, smoking or bad eating habits. However, should jaundice strike, there’s a potent, non-invasive and rather not too unpleasant herbal remedy that has been available to traditional medicine, especially Siddha, over thousands of years. In traditional Siddha, the fundamental methodology is to attack the root of the disease, rather than eliminate just the symptoms. So the basic approach is to practice ascetism during the course of the treatment – a total elimination of all the factors that cause the disease. No drink, smoke, drugs or junk food. A lot of rest, and herbal treatment using age old recipes and formulas does the trick – you get better in the course of a couple of weeks. However, beware – jaundice could strike again anytime should you start indulging yourself again!
